What were your symptoms prior to surgery? I have had a continual sore throat for the last year and a half, laryngitis, coughing, choking and chest pain. I also had to wake up 2-3 times every night due to a burning sensation in my mouth. After a gradual onset of symptoms, I finally consulted an ENT because it felt as if something was stuck in my throat. Over the past 2-3 years, I had been taking double doses of Nexium as well as TUMS 3-4 times a day (4-5 pills at a time). I was not getting any symptom relief.
What made you consider surgery? PPIs and antacids weren’t working for me. While I knew that things could happen if GERD went untreated, it became more real when a friend of mine recently had an esophagectomy (removal of the esophagus) for ulcerous cancer due to untreated GERD. Further, I am a nurse and know the surgeon who does the TIF procedure at the hospital. He did TIFs on two friends of mine a year ago, and they have both seen good results and experienced symptom relief for GERD.
When did you get this procedure done? I had the TIF procedure done in June 2011 and am now 6-weeks post procedure. I chose TIF because it is less invasive than conventional surgery with less recovery time involved.
How was the procedure/recovery? There was initially a little more pain than I expected but after 2 weeks I felt better and was back at work. My diet was liquids and pureed foods, and I was told not to eat large portions. My doctor believes too much food can expand the stomach and put undue stress on the sutures while they are still healing. I am now eating regular foods but smaller amounts at a time.
How are you doing now? Life really has changed since my TIF procedure. The pain and symptoms are completely gone and I no longer have to wake up 2-3 times every night. The sore throat I had for the last 1.5 years is gone and I am off all pills!
Would you recommend TIF? Absolutely! I would tell everyone that it is worth the 2 weeks of minor discomfort post-procedure, which was nothing compared to the GERD symptoms I had been living with. I would definitely recommend the TIF and have already told friends I know who have similar problems with acid reflux.
