About the TIF Procedure

TIF stands for "Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication" and is performed with the innovative EsophyX surgical device. A unique form of "Natural Orifice Surgery," or NOS for short, TIF represents the next step in the evolution of minimally invasive surgery and offers a huge leap in the evolution of the treatment of GERD. .

Similar to laparoscopic GERD surgery, TIF is used to treat the underlying anatomical cause of GERD by reconstructing the body's natural antireflux barrier and and restoring the competency of the gastroesophageal junction, resulting in the effective elimination of GERD.

An Entirely Incisionless Procedure

Because the TIF procedure is performed entirely through the patient's mouth, or "transorally" in medical terms, there are no abdominal incisions in the skin.

  • Transoral: TIF is performed from within the GI tract. The EsophyX device is inserted through the patient's mouth.
  • Incisionless: There are no skin incision, resulting in reduced discomfort, faster recovery, and better patient satisfaction.
  • Fundoplication: This term refers to folding the part of the stomach called the fundus to create folds, or "plications," to form an antireflux valve.

Based on the Proven Principles of
Conventional GERD Surgery

The TIF procedure is closely based on the well-established principles of conventional GERD surgery and delivers similar benefits but with less patient discomfort, faster recovery, and fewer adverse effects. Most patients are able to return to work and normal activities within a couple of days after their TIF procedure.

Candidates for the TIF Procedure

The TIF procedure is most appropriate for people suffering from moderate to severe GERD who:

  • Experience heartburn or non-heartburn symptoms of GERD on a regular basis
  • No longer respond adequately or are dissatisfied with pharmaceutical therapies
  • Are concerned about the long-term adverse effects of a lifetime of taking pills

The Key Benefits

  • Incisionless surgery, performed through the mouth, not through an incision
  • Anatomical repair eliminates need for pills
  • Reduces or eliminates possible long-term adverse effects of taking pills. (Long-term use of PPIs has been shown to increase incidence of osteoporosis and hip fractures, particularly among women over 50.)
